Registered Office Address UK: The Rules Since March 2024
Every UK company must keep a registered office address, and since 4 March 2024 that address must be an "appropriate address". Two conditions define it: someone must be made aware of post delivered to the company there, and the sender must be able to get confirmation of delivery. A Royal Mail PO Box no longer qualifies. What makes an address "appropriate"?
The test is about receipt, not about ownership. The address has to be one where delivery reaches a person acting for the company, and where the sender can obtain proof that it arrived. A staffed reception meets both conditions; an empty unit, a maildrop with no signature and a PO Box do not.
The address must also sit in the same UK jurisdiction the company is registered in — a company registered in Scotland needs a Scottish registered office, and a company registered in England and Wales needs one there. What happens if the address does not meet the test?
A weak UK registered office is now an existence risk for the company rather than a paperwork problem. Companies House can change the address to a default address and can ultimately strike the company off the register. This is the part of the 2024 change that has teeth: before it, a weak registered office was a compliance irritation; now it is an existence risk for the company.
Can you use a virtual office as a registered office?
Yes, provided that particular building meets the appropriate-address test and the operator accepts statutory mail. The two are not the same promise: a virtual office package that forwards commercial post may explicitly exclude court documents and Companies House correspondence, and the registered office is precisely where those are served. Ask the operator to confirm statutory mail in writing before you file the address.

Can you use your home address instead?
You can, and it is free, but the registered office appears on the public Companies House register and anyone can look it up — including anyone with a grievance against the company. The home address must still meet the same appropriate-address test, and a residential address does meet it whenever someone is there to receive post.

How do you change a registered office address?

There is one detail that catches people out: the address does not officially change until Companies House has registered it, so statutory mail is still validly served at the old address until then — keep collecting it. The new address must meet the appropriate-address test and sit in the same UK jurisdiction as the old one.
Changing the registered office does not change anything else on the record: a service address for a director, a trading address and a VAT address are separate entries that need separate updates.
