Hot Desking in the UK: What a Hot Desk Costs
A hot desk is any free seat on a shared floor: you turn up, take a desk, and it is not yours tomorrow. It is the cheapest way into a workspace, and the one most often quoted without saying which product the price belongs to. This page gives the market figures with their sources, says plainly which of them we can stand behind, and points at the buildings where desks are actually listed.
Where these numbers come from
They are not our catalogue prices. Everything else on this site is the operator's own asking rate for a specific room or desk. Hot desking is the exception: we do not list it as a separate product in any building — our coworking listings are dedicated desks, one line per building. So the figures below are published market rates from third parties, cited with their dates, and the rate for any particular building is whatever its operator quotes when you ask.
By the month
- £150–250 a month is the usual band across the UK. Two published measurements sit inside it: a UK median of £156 for open workspace and a UK average of £202 for a hot desk.
- £270–350 a month in London, where one published average puts a hot desk at £273.
- A dedicated desk — the format we do list — has a published UK median of £210 a month, against £156 for open workspace. That gap, roughly a quarter, is what a guaranteed seat costs.
By the day
Day passes run £15–45 in most of the country, with observed rates from £22.80 to £106.80 and a median of £42. Central London is the top of that range and beyond it. Sampled cities: Edinburgh £22.80, Manchester £24, Bristol £42, London West End £106.80.
The arithmetic worth doing: at a £42 median day rate, eight days a month already costs more than the middle of the monthly band. Day passes suit genuinely occasional use; past roughly two days a week a membership is cheaper.

Note the two units. A desk rate is per person; a room rate is for the whole room, so the two entry figures are not directly comparable — the trade-offs are worked through in the format comparison.
What the rate normally covers — and what to ask
As a market convention, running costs sit inside a flexible-workspace rate rather than beside it: business rates, utilities, cleaning, building insurance and Wi-Fi. That is why a desk figure is much closer to your true monthly total than a lease rent is.
What differs building to building, and is worth asking before you sign:
- Whether the quote is inclusive or exclusive of VAT — the commonest reason two quotes are not comparable
- Access hours, and what out-of-hours or 24/7 access costs where it is not standard
- Any meeting-room allowance in hours, and the rate beyond it
- Notice period and deposit on the agreement you are being offered
- Whether a registered address or mail handling can be added, and at what price
- How several desks are quoted on one agreement, rather than the single rate multiplied out

Desks are listed in 543 buildings across 172 towns and cities, from 8 operators. Our listings show the dedicated-desk rate the operator quoted; if you want a hot desk in the same building, ask — most operators running a shared floor sell both, but the split and the price are theirs to confirm, not ours to publish.
Coverage is wider than choice: only 78 of those towns have more than one building with desks, so elsewhere you are choosing a building rather than comparing a market. Where the desks actually are, counted town by town, is in our supply research.
